my 2019 in books

another year has come and gone and with it is a list of books i finished reading within that year. 2019 was a big year for me...i did a lot of travel--both for work and for fun--but one of my biggest accomplishments was finishing my master's degree! if you're in school you know that reading for pleasure isn't really at the top of the list, hence my (embarrassingly) short list of books that i finished within the last year. i'm setting my sights higher for 2020, though, so let's hope this list is much longer next year!

Strengths Based Leadership - Tom Rath

i actually had to read this book for my strategic planning class, but ended up really enjoying it! we also took the strengthsfinder assessment, which this book discusses in depth. i would recommend it if you're into personality assessments and such. (any INFJ's out there? :))

The Rest of the Story - Sarah Dessen

it is no secret that i'm a huge sarah dessen fan--i own pretty much her entire catalogue. so when i saw that she was coming out with a new book, you know i pre-ordered it with a quickness. this is a really sweet story about emma saylor, a girl who is looking to put the pieces together about her mom's side of the family. there's a lake, an ice cream truck, and of course, a boy. need i say more?

Holding up the Universe - Jennifer Niven

this book gave me all the feels. we follow libby and jack, who, on the surface, are complete opposites, but are tied after one incident that (as cliche as it sounds) changes their lives forever. being a psychology major in college, i found it extremely fascinating that jennifer niven chose to explore prosopagnosia (a neurological condition characterized by the inability to recognize the faces of familiar people) in this book. it's also a sweet story about first loves. all my favorite things rolled into one!

*bonus! favorite quote in the book: "the story of two broken, lonely people who maybe aren't so broken or lonely anymore."

All About Love - bell hooks

i don't have a picture for this next one, but this was one of my favorite reads this past year. as the title suggests, bell hooks explores the different types of love (familial, romantic, spiritual, etc.) in this book, paired with her own experiences. i resonated with a lot of what she wrote and would definitely recommend this one!

Maybe This Time - Kasie West

oh, kasie west, the queen of the meet-cutes, relatable heroines, and all-around happy-making books (you know, the ones that just put a smile on your face). this one is no exception. sophie and andrew are probably the last two people on the planet who want to spend any time together, but fate--as it will--brings them together for multiple occasions over the course of one year. this is a light enemies to friends to more than friends (?) story that will have you laughing along the way. a perfect beach read!

Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine - Gail Honeyman

this book came as a recommendation from a dear friend and was coincidentally gifted to me from kim at @talkwordytome_ (check out her instagram page!) this is another one that tops my list of favorites for 2019. i laughed, i cried, i cheered eleanor on...and it took me on a roller coaster of emotions. there is so much more than the blurb on the back of the book...layers that just kept peeling away as i went through the book. pick up a copy, you won't be disappointed!

Waking Olivia - Elizabeth O'Roarke

my last book of the year was read on my kindle with my kindle unlimited membership (thanks, black friday deals!). this book kept me guessing until the very end. i would say it's a mystery/thriller/romance/coming-of-age/contemporary read that never gets boring. i was hooked until the last page and finished the book in about one day--and my sister can vouch for that. i had a serious book hangover after i finished. all i can say is olivia is one tough cookie..and i would like a will langstrom for myself, please and thank you.

...and that wraps up my reads for 2019! i'd love to hear what your favorite book was in the last year :) i can sense more titles being added to my tbr pile!

happy reading!
