all the bright places | jennifer niven
Theodore Finch is fascinated by death, and he constantly thinks of ways he might kill himself. But each time, something good, no matter how small, stops him.
Violet Markey lives for the future, counting the days until graduation, when she can escape her Indiana town and her aching grief in the wake of her sister’s recent death.
When Finch and Violet meet on the ledge of the bell tower at school, it’s unclear who saves whom. And when they pair up on a project to discover the “natural wonders” of their state, both Finch and Violet make more important discoveries: It’s only with Violet that Finch can be himself—a weird, funny, live-out-loud guy who’s not such a freak after all. And it’s only with Finch that Violet can forget to count away the days and start living them. But as Violet’s world grows, Finch’s begins to shrink.
get your tissues ready for this one, you're going to need them. i had first picked up ALL THE BRIGHT PLACES maybe a year ago in a bookstore, but had too many books in my TBR (to-be-read) pile that i forced myself to put it back. fast forward to now (shout-out to target for having a killer deal on this book) and i am so glad i finally got around to reading it.
have you ever had the feeling where your heart feels like it's literally breaking in your chest for the characters in the books you're reading? because that was me with violet and finch. from their meeting at the bell tower to their blossoming relationship to each one overcoming an obstacle because of the other person, i was right there with them, cheering them on. but what i thought was a regular contemporary turned into a beautiful and heart-breaking story about mental illness. i did not expect it to take that turn. every event and every emotion in the book was so beautifully written and executed; it opened my eyes even further to the realities of coping with mental illness.
i don't want to give too much away, but please, get yourself a copy of this book. brace yourself, though: your heart will ache as you reach the final pages, but you won't be disappointed.
